Dr. Peter Hanson is a San Diego native. After graduating from Monte Vista High School, Dr. Hanson attended Occidental College in Los Angeles from which he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He stayed in Southern California, attending the University of California, Irvine Medical School. He graduated with honors in 1986, president of his graduating class. He ventured north to Sacramento, completing his internship and orthopaedic residency at the University of California, Davis Medical Center in 1991. Interest in total joints replacement surgery led to a fellowship in adult lower extremity total joint reconstruction at The Scripps Clinic in La Jolla.

Dr. Hanson came home to La Mesa and joined Grossmont Orthopaedic Medical Group in August of 1992 and has enjoyed all aspects of his orthopaedic practice, which includes arthroscopy and lower extremity total joint replacement including introducing the anterior hip approach to East County. He has held major leadership positions that have been focused on patient care. He has been Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery, and for over 20 years has served as the Medical Director of Orthopaedic Surgery at Grossmont Hospital, a position that involves orchestrating the Total Joint Replacement program for the hospital. At Grossmont Hospital, he has served as Chief of Staff, as well as Chairman of the Board of Directors. He served on the Board of Directors for Grossmont Hospital for 16 years and the Board of Directors for Sharp Healthcare for 6 years.

Dr. Hanson is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, class of 1996. He is an active member of The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, San Diego Orthopaedics Society where he has served as President of the San Diego Chapter, and the California Orthopaedic Association.
