Important Medicare Message From Dr. Hanson –

For the past 34 years, It has been my pleasure to have provided orthopaedic care to San Diegans. Beginning in July 2026, I will no longer be seeing patients covered under the Medicare insurance programs. For a myriad of reasons, this is no longer realistic.

With yearly cuts to specialists, the only way to maintain a private practice is to increase volume of office visits and surgeries. At this point in my career, I am choosing not to increase my surgical and clinical volume.

Increased volume means less time per surgical case, and runs the risk of diminishing quality of care. It also could affect my own health and well-being. This increase would also diminish the time I can spend with each patient, including thorough discussions of surgical and non-surgical options.
My goal is to do the opposite – spend more time with each patient visit, and perform fewer operations, allowing me more time per case. I also need to spend more time traveling with my wife, and enjoying more quality time with our 3-year-old grandson in Boston, who is, quite frankly, the cutest human being on the planet.

My other option would be to retire completely, which I don’t want to do.
Additionally, I have been working to diminish the need for surgical care in orthopaedics through my research in orthobiologics and other non-operative modalities. Fortunately for me and my patients, some of that research is taking off. I have several FDA approved autologous stem cell trials currently getting underway, and only by cutting down my surgical practice am I able to offer these cutting-edge, innovative options.

You can explore some of these options here in this website.

If you have any interest in this research, we also have a non-profit foundation to support clinical research: Regenerative Orthopaedic and Concussion Research Foundation.

We are excited to be involved in and supporting this groundbreaking work.

Thank you for your continued trust in me and the other surgeons and staff at Grossmont Orthopaedic Medical Group. I have trusted my own joint replacement surgical care to them, and I know I can trust yours with them as well.
